The Art of Faith

Have you heard the saying that the best art comes in a frame?

Your mind may go to the thoughts of a wall-hanging however this quote was made in the context of the frame of a window or the frame of your thoughts.

This morning I saw a most beautiful piece of art. It was a fiery orange burst of color against the backdrop of a lavender/blue sky. The colors meshed similar to a kaleidoscope changing before my eyes. In this sunrise I wished I had the picture in a frame on my wall. The view was breathtaking.

I stood and watched the evolution of color. In the background a chorus of birds sang to me while a soft hush whispered through the trees. The scent of grass tickled my nose.

It was a magnificent moment.

A wave of gratitude washed through every cell of my being.

What a marvelous morning.

This is a perfect way to view a new day.

I now have a piece of priceless art safely tucked in to my mind. I hope you will take a moment to find a magnificent piece of art during your day. It might be found in the giggle of a child or the greeting of a loyal pet. The moments surround us.

Genesis 1:1 - In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
What fabulous art we have been given.

I am grateful for the Art in my Days…..what is in your frame?

Day 11 - Got Faith?

Have you ever noticed how easy it is to keep the faith when things are going well?  Praying seems to be a natural response to express appreciation and joy!.  What about when things are not going as well?  Worse yet, what if you have a crisis?
As we all know, the headlines have been peppered with stories about people losing their jobs for a wide variety of reasons.  They say that a loss of job is one of the top 5 stressors in life.  Given this fact I think it is safe to say that we are all living in a society that is completely stressed out.

In Hebrews 11:1 we read:
"Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see."

It sounds simple enough - or does it?  Do we really have faith in what is unseen?  One of my favorite examples of this is LOVE.  It is not something that can be seen however we all know it is around us.  We can't put it in a box and yet it is the subject of many songs, sonnets and more.

I bring up having faith during difficult times and having faith in what is unseen as a reminder to all of us - faith is an ongoing exercise.  It will manifest in many different ways however it is based on trust and a relationship with God.  Putting our complete being in His hands, truly turning over a situation or concern to Him is the most liberating and yet the most challenging experience.

Have you really turned over your path to God?  Is he driving the car?  Are you asking for direction and then listening and paying attention for a response?  I am embracing this constant challenge and I invite you to join me.  The more I let him steer the clearer my path......go forth in FAITH!

Day 10 - Relationships

When was the last time you shared a meal or coffee with a friend?  Do you remember the warmth of familiarity the conversation brought?  Was there a comfort in your meeting?

I had one of those events today and I felt absolutely blessed and grateful at the end of the meeting.  We even ran late however it seemed appropriate.  We shared stories, tears, concerns and love.  Above all else...love.  Within this group, we sincerely care for one another and we all seem to be going through different levels of transition.  As I listened to the stories and the challenges, I was honored with the trust and vulnerability being entrusted in me.

I am also reminded of this passage of scripture:

Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

In cultivating relationships we are feeding our fruit - the fruit of the spirit.  Am I expressing love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness gentleness and self-control?  Can you imagine how life would be if we focused on fruit?

My harvest was plentiful today and I was elated to have shared in our time today.  It was a powerful meeting closing with prayer.  I could feel God's reassuring presence as we closed.  Inasmuch as we face trials and challenges, it helps to carry the weight when you realize those you respect carry the same luggage.  Sharing our luggage and weight makes a tremendous difference.  It offers hope and peace.  In the end there is LOVE!

I wish you fruitful relationships filled with the gifts of the spirit.

Finding Spiritual Armor

I drove for 3 hours today and was listening to Christian radio.  Driving is a great time for reflection and listening to Christian radio is a tremendous bonus :).  I can really focus on the words and message.  Today the scripture of Ephesians 6 was highlighted.  I had heard this scripture before however I had never really embrace the representations - what it meant.

In Ephesians 6:11 we read - Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.  This is the equipment we need to face the manipulative and negative attacks we are going to face.  Do you think about how negative forces impact your daily life?  They may manifest in thoughts, actions, gossip and more.

Our society is quick to condemn sins related to sexual indiscretions and criminal actions however in the bible Jesus was equally if not more critical of areas like gossip.  Why do people gossip?  People often have the goal of building themselves up by making others look bad.  Recently I have been the target of negative words based on false assumptions.  I think we all fall in to this area from time to time however, the degrees of hurt may vary.

Furthermore in Proverbs 11:12–13  A man who lacks judgment derides his neighbor, but a man of understanding holds his tongue. A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy man keeps a secret. (NIV)

This is where we bring the armor out.  What is this armor God has provided?

  • The belt of truth buckled around your waist,.
  • The breastplate of righteousness
  • Feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.
  • The shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
  • The helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Wow - talk about giving us Teflon.  If we really look up the armor of God daily, what could we do?  There is nothing we couldn't withstand.  There is no room for gossip when you have your armor on.

I am going to meditate on the armor daily to ensure I am ready to meet the day.  Join Me?

Day 8 - Go Forth & Be A Blessing!

Have you thought about our calling as Christians?
Have you ever entered a day thinking, I am going to be a blessing to everyone I meet?
Have you ever started you ever started your day thinking; I am going to look for ways to be kind to others?

Do you remember hearing the scripture; judge not, lest thou be judged?  It stems from this section of the bible;  Matthew 7:1-2:
1. Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. 2. For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged

Can you imagine how your day would be impacted if you walked with this message in your heart daily?  There are so many people who are starving for acceptance and kindness.  The world sends us messages through all sorts of media surrounding discontent and judgement.  Yet I know that I will be presented with opportunities to be kind today.  I will meet people looking for a kind gesture, a smile or perhaps more?  Is there someone out there who needs comfort?

This is my focus for my faith journey today.  It starts with my family - my children, my husband, my friends, my family......I will keep you posted on progress.

I wish you well on your own journey!  Go forth and be a blessing!!!

Need an idea to help in this area?
Hold a door open, say hello to someone you don't know, send a nice card to someone you don't know, call a friend just to say hello, take a neighbor a plant, write your kids a note, read scripture at a senior center.....

Day 7 - TGIM!!

Monday - what do you think of when you hear the word Monday?

It is traditionally the first day of the work week and signals the beginning.  When you hear people say this word the energy behind it is usually distinct.  Sometimes it is positive, sometimes it is flat.  Rarely does saying the word "Monday" garner the same energy as when we say "Friday."  Friday = the start of the weekend and we have a different level of enthusiasm for this day of the week.

This brings me to a set of follow up questions.  Do you love what you do?  Do you serve others in your work?  Work is an interesting setting.  If you are passionate about what you do and able to use your God given talents in your work, unique and innovative things emerge.  If we are focused on the positive outcomes we are a part of, large and small, our eyes focus on new realities and possibilities.

I am reminded of Proverbs 15:30 -

A cheerful look brings joy to the heart,

and good news gives health to the bones.

Is it possible to give the word Monday a cheerful look?  Could we embrace this day of the week with the same anticipation as Friday?  Would this kind of shift in energy and attitude have a positive impact on our day?  Our week?  According to Proverbs the answer is a resounding YES!
My prayer for today is to embrace the day with enthusiasm and look for ways to be a blessing.  When we serve in this mode amazing things emerge.  I pray that God will help guide my steps.

TGIM -  Thank God It's Monday

Day 6 - Endings and Beginnings

We graduated from high school today and it was an amazing day.  While the end of one era has begun, another is just getting started.

Becoming an adult is a unique adventure tailored for each one of us.

As I breathe deep and think about the next steps of the journey, I am reminded of this scripture:

A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.” (Proverbs 16:9)

I pray for all of the graduates, their families and their loved ones.  May they listen for God's guidance and follow the steps he provides.  Enjoy the journey......

Day 5 - Butterfly Kisses

Have you heard the song butterfly kisses?  It is a wonderful story about the love of a father for his daughter and the milestones they travel throughout life and the anchoring memory are the butterfly kisses they shared.

It is sweet and touching.

As my daughter prepares for high school graduation this weekend, I think about songs like this one.  I also think about the love of Jesus.  I think about the situations he faced.  All of the lessons he taught and ultimately the sacrifice he made so that we may all have eternal life.

We are all connected.  Love binds and bridges when nothing else makes sense.  The love of a mother for her daughter, the love of our heavenly father.  When I reflect on this sacrifice I am awestruck.  It is hard to imagine being faced with this level of sacrifice and I question how I would respond if I were faced with such a dilemma that would require the ultimate sacrifice.

I would like to think I would/could make the right choice but I still question the level of my faith and my courage if presented with this question.

This scripture:  So that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men (human philosophy), but in the power of God. 1 Corinthians 2: 5

Reminds me that sometimes I must simply believe in what God provides.  What I understand and what I do not understand.  Trust in the will of God and grow in my faith.  The old saying is that it is easy to have faith when times are good however it is more challenging when things are not as good.  When faith is all you have to hang onto - it is an even greater choice.  All of these situations present us - me with the opportunity to grow and strengthen my faith roots!

I will sprinkle my path with prayer and embrace the path of growth before me, perhaps I will have my own butterfly kisses.

Day 4 - The Wonder of Sunshine

It has been gray, rainy and damp the last 24 hours.  I understand how important it is to nurture the land however a rainy day is also a reminder of how much we enjoy the sunshine.  The energy flows differently on a rainy day.  Did you know people can also possess sunshine?   Think about it.  When was the last time you received an unexpected note, call or visit from a friend?  Did it change the course of your day?  I am preparing for graduation festivities this weekend and this will include a visit by family and friends.  Part of the preparation has included cleaning and painting.  Is my heart ready?  Will I optimize my time with family?

I realized that if I'm obsessing about my own feelings, I'm not present with the people around me—and am frankly of no use to them.”— Jane Lynch

There will be much sunshine in my weekend, will I notice?  I read this quote and it started a tidal wave of thoughts about the weekend.  I hope I take the time to enjoy the company of all of those around me.  My "baby" graduates from high school this weekend.  While this marks the end of one educational era, it also marks the beginning of a new one.  I want to be "present" for each moment and grateful for the experiences this weekend.

I also pray for all of the graduates and their loved ones.  In the bible we learn about new beginnings:

2 Corinthians 5:17

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. (NKJV)

May we all behold the love of Christ and make room in our hearts and minds to be present in the moment and grateful for all of those around us.  Enjoy the sunshine of your weekend.

Love Thine _________?

Welcome to day 3 of my journey in faith.  My theme for today is about "loving our enemies."  This is a reflection on an event that impacted me within the last day and it presented me with an incredible opportunity for growth.

Have you ever been kind to someone and their response to you was negative?  It happens.  It also provided me with an opportunity for growth and reflection.  This is where "loving thine enemy" came to mind.

How do we reach out in love when someone has been mean to us?

How do we forgive when we have been hurt?

How do we respond when we are verbally attacked?

These may sound like strong statements but they are all part of life.  We will all deal with these situations at some point.  It becomes a part of our faith fabric.  It is easy to respond with love when people are kind to us however it is much more challenging when people are unkind to us.

However, if we receive insults or negative expressions, we are called to respond in a Christ-like manner. It is important not to take things personally or give in to hurt feelings.  When our emotions take over in these types of situations the response will most likely be inappropriate.

Instead, my recommendation is to see the other person as someone with a problem who needs God's help and your prayers.  I know this sounds good in theory.  I am trying to exercise this exact muscle as I type this.  I know it will require discipline for me NOT to respond as I normally would.  I am also going to recite the scripture below to help me during this time.

2 Corinthians 12:10 (New International Version)

That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

I am certain this is not the last time I will write on this topic however it is a blessed beginning.

Day 2 - The Teacher Emerges

I can tell this is going to be an incredible journey the next 364 days. I decided to begin yesterday and the most interesting thing happened.

Let me back up for a moment. There is a popular saying that goes something like this; when the student is ready, the teacher emerges. Have you heard this? Felt this? Yesterday after I officially began this journey - it happened to me...on a couple of levels.

Initially I began to reflect on what I had learned yesterday and I asked myself what was motivating me to do this? I had many answers.....I want to learn, I want to share, blogging about my faith journey is a way to keep me accountable and I love to write. I know this will be meaningful to me and blogging is a way to give the experience life. If this doesn't make sense right now....I think it will. Let's give it time.

Now regarding the statement that I started with - when you are ready to learn, the teacher emerges....last night I had the most unusual experience. My son recently returned from college and a friend of his stopped by last night. He came in and asked me if I had a bible. Now I have been asked many things by my son's friends - they are all part of my family - but I had never been asked this question. My heart jumped for joy.....you have come to the right place. I think I own somewhere between 6 - 12 bibles. Pick a translation and I am sure I have it.

I found this young man a bible....he had just heard a scripture recommendation on the radio and he wanted to look it up immediately. It was Proverbs 15:13 - A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit. (NIV) I am sure this young man is relating to this passage due to a change with his dating situation. I remember those days of young heartache. They are such teaching moments at a young age.

As we get older our heartache changes and matures. It can stem from many things. Lost love, lost faith, lost job, disappointment. The list grows. How do we guard our hearts? How do we recover from heartache?

Prayer. Faith. A relationship with Jesus Christ. Jesus is constantly there, listening to the concerns of the heart. Do we allow him in? Do we ask for guidance? Do we acknowledge the healing power outside of ourselves? There is another saying; time is a great healer. I would edit this to say: time with Jesus is a great healer. It can renew a happy heart and help us to smile on the inside and outside again!

More Proverbs?

Day 1 - Mary, Martha & April?

I am currently reading a book entitled; "Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World" by Joanna Weaver. If you have not read this book, I would encourage you to add it to your list. A wonderful friend gave it to me and it has been a real "heart-opener" for me. (my name is April - thus the title for day 1)

Like many of you, I am a worrier at heart. I am not exactly certain what this is rooted in. Childhood experiences, motherhood, personality, DNA...? Probably a combination of all of the above. With the emotion of worry you also cultivate a strong gene for Anxiety. Again, I am not sure what the root is but I can tell you Worry & Anxiety are strong cousins and they love to hang out. I think they actually feed off of each other.

As I have been reading this book, I have learned that these emotions are not of God. They are not what he wants for us. I never thought about that before and this really put them in to a new context for me. Did you know that the term "fear not" is mentioned 350 times in the bible. You see God also knew we were stubborn or slow to listen. In my case probably a little bit of both.

Understanding this fundamental concept about worry and anxiety has been a big "wake up call." It seems like we are all over-scheduled, under- appreciated and over-taxed 24/7. As a matter of fact I can count on one hand the number of people I know who appear to have "balance" in their lives. No wonder we have things like road rage and compulsive eating disorders.

Back to the good stuff. The bible provides us with guidance and hope....yes HOPE!! Here are a couple of passages that really work:

Matthew 11:28-30 (New International Version)

Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.

Philippians 4:6-7 (New International Version)

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with Thanksgiving, present your requests to God and the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

I have written these 2 bible verses on index cards and I have put them on my bathroom mirror. They are a healthy and constant reminder to put my worry and my concerns where they belong. With God.
